Construction Engineering Careers

Shannon Said:

What is better Construction management/engineering or instrumentation engineering as a career?

We Answered:

I have worked many years in the engineering field and you have already touched on the two most lucrative specialties; chemical engineering and instrumentation engineering. I agree however that each of those are little be on the theorhetical side and you don't really get to see stuff built. Mechanical engineering on the other hand can work in just about any sector. It's like the business degree of the engineering world.

You however want to know about Contruction Mgmt. Well, if you like the outdoors and enjoy travelling to the job site, wherever it may be, then this career path can be very rewarding. You can pretty much get an easy start without much experience. Mostly because not a lot of people want to be far from home. Experience will greatly enhance your earning potential but you will get that and then some just after your first major project.

I would suggest hooking up with a large construction firm and learn from them before trying to take your skills to a smaller market.

Good luck.

Peter Said:

about construction. civil engineering and architect careers?

We Answered:

What you cane do is go for a civil engineering major and then getting a MBS (new degree which is an MS and MBA put together). Also which is not as good of a path as civil engineering you can do Industrial engineering because that has to do with systems and managing. But the best bet is to go into Civil Engineering and then looking a business aspect of it. And with any other jobs now a days it is tough to get a job.

Ethel Said:

is construction engineering a good career choice?

We Answered:

A degree in mechanical engineering or civil engineering is appropriate for a construction engineer. I say this because you may find one more interesting than the other.

To be really successful as a construction engineer, you need to be comfortable in outdoor locations and environments as well as more formal office situations. Having an easy way with skilled labor or craftsman is also a great asset.

I worked for several years as a construction engineer and really enjoyed it.

I think you will find the pay can be just as good as a "regular" engineer and doubly so if you move on to site or project manager positions.

Victoria Said:

Can anyone help me shed light on the career prospect for an African american in Construction Engineering & Mgt

We Answered:

As an experienced (Caucasian male) engineer in the Construction Management field with a large firm, I would say your prospects are excellent. Go for it.

The percentage of African-Americans who go into Engineering is sadly far below their demographic percentage in the typical university as a whole. My Uni had (at a guess) maybe 10% black population in total, but in College of Engineering, less than 1%!! Why don't more choose Engineering as a career? I don't know. After all, the best thing about college is, you get to major in whatever you want.*

My company would love to recruit more qualified graduates of underrepresented minorities. There are not that many out there applying for jobs. I have worked with a number of people of African background, but some of those have been native-born Africans or from the Carribean.

[*The asterisk is this: realistically, to successfully study Engineering, any incoming freshman needs to have taken all the advanced math and science their high school offers, or they won't be prepared coming in.]

Good luck. Email me if you could use an employment lead.
