Petroleum Engineering Careers

Clyde Said:

I've got a call from UPES Dehradun , wat shud I do ? Is petroleum engineering a viable career ?

We Answered:

What branch in MIT Pune ?
If it is petroleum engineering in MIT also, the preference could be UPES Dehradun

Lester Said:

What is the difference between majoring in geology and engineering for petroleum related careers?

We Answered:

Geologists help to explore and develop oil and natural gas fields using various mapping interpretations as to what the layers of rock under the ground might look like. They use rock outcrops and other analogies to refine their mapping. They plan where to drill wells and how to obtain Information from those wells as to rock cores & other samples plus a whole host of measurements obtained from electrical cables run into the wells. Then after a well or wells are drilled and measurements are analyzed they then refine their maps looking for other drilling locations.

Petroleum Engineers have 3 main roles in the oil & gas industry with that being Drilling Engineers, Reservoir Engineers, and Production Engineers. They often work in teams with various disciplines including Geologists to design oilfields, design the actual well architectures, and to optimize oil & gas production over the life of the fields.

Katrina Said:

Petroleum Engineering?

We Answered:

Having worked in the Industry for 51years alongside Petroleum and Chemical Engineers, I can fully endorse the career as one of the most interesting and remunerative professions. You can get to see much of the world as I have done. The most amazing being my 30 years in the Sahara Desert. Don't be concerned about the petering out of the Petroleum deposits. There are new fields (petroleum bearing formations) being discovered daily. Bringing these to production status is very rewarding, personally and financially.

Lauren Said:

Is Electrical Engineering inferior to Petroleum Engineering?

We Answered:

There will always be a need for both. No form of engineering is "inferior" to the other. Engineers all have the same goal, to improve the quality of life for the rest of the world. Whether it is making a better fuel, or making better electrical components, there will always be a need for engineering. As far as pay goes, one may have better entry level paying positions, however, once you are in industry, it is up to YOU to strive for the big bucks if you want. It is all about your ambition and your talent. Your degree is your ticket into the industry, what you do in industry is directly porportional to your advancement through your career.

Questions regarding a Petroleum Engineering career?

We Answered:

I can appreciate you feeling about the Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania area but petroleum engineers live where the work is and can't be too choosy about that.

Petroleum engineers go to the field from time to time but much of what they do is based on data retrieved from down hole and therefore they do not need to be in the field as much as they did at one time.

There is no typical work week for a petroleum engineer any more than there is for any other engineering discipline.

Martin Said:

I am an Electronic Engineer can I switch my career to Petroleum engineering?

We Answered:

Would it not be better to contact a major employer in field or an educational institute in your region? Just saying .... Or being as you have 5 years exp I would assume that you are a registered engineer what about contacting the engineering governing body and asking them?

Depending on location, I know here in Canada you would have a difficult time and it would definitely require a fair bit of schooling. I think it would depend on the school you go to, what courses you have that are not in the electrical stream, and then all those important courses that you are going ot have to make up. At least you should get credit for all the maths/non-eng electives, but I would assume it to take you 2 years still, particularly b/c 50% of the course load must be taken at your given institute. Being as you didn't not specify location that may not apply at all.

Cindy Said:

what is better to choose between a career in Petroleum engineering and one in Natural Gas engineering?

We Answered:

Go with natural gas. It has a brighther future as petro is not our future option.
