Medical Coding Careers

Kristin Said:

Is Medical coding a good career choice?

We Answered:

According to the US Department of Labor, coding jobs are going to be increasing at a faster rate than the average for all jobs. http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos103.htm Plus, even with the economy in a recession, people still need healthcare and still need to see a doctor. Coders are still needed to code medical records for billing. So according to the DOL, it is a good career. Seeing open positions in your area is also a sign that it is a good career. People are hiring.

If you are looking for a school, here is a demo of a coding course that I like http://www.careerstep.com/demo-cb/?uid=a… It is for both coding and billing and is very reasonably priced. You get a certificate upon graduation and then in order to become a coder, you have to take an exam. Look through the demo to see what you think. Here is also another link to info about coding http://www.careerstep.com/coding/?uid=a1…

Questions about Medical Transcriptionist/medical coding/stay at home careers?

We Answered:

For transcription or coding, you have to have a minimum of one year of on-the-job training before you can work at home. Most companies though, require 3-5 years of on-the-job work. Don't be fooled to think you can go to school and then just start working from home, it doesn't work like that. And if someone says they'll hire you with no experience, then you don't want to work for that company, you'll probably never get paid!
As far as your education, your best bet is to go to an accredited school and get an A.S. degree so you can sit for the RHIT examination. Not all schools are accredited so do the research first! Check with your community college, or visit www.ahima.org to find out the list of accredited schools.

What job duties are involved in medical billing and coding career?

We Answered:

It depends. Since you don't have any experience, which I assume you don't, I highly doubt you'll get a job strictly coding. From my experience I can tell you that most of your duties will be dealing with claims and insurance. As far as working in the front helping patients that depends on where u work and if there isn't somewhere there that already does that. But if u do you'll probably give out paperwork to fill out, take copays, make copies, and such things. I can go on and on, but u may want to try to search for jobs and just look at the job descriptions, that might help. It took me a year to find a job after I graduated...Good Luck!!

Can come one advise me on Medical Coding career?

We Answered:

There aren't supposed to be too many jobs for the medical coder or biller (or medical assistant) despite what those private expensive career/technical schools say. With medical coding, the person usually needs a couple of years experience doing coding tasks, certification(s) in the field and preferably completion of an accredited coding program to possibly get a job.

With schooling, please steer clear of those online, for-profit schools (some have 'bricks and mortar' buildings and may be 'accredited') such as penn foster, ashworth, everest, ITT tech, sanford brown, kaplan, career step, argosy, walden, US career, remington, stratford career, devry, colorado tech, ashford, strayer and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit' (and course credits may Not transfer): http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search.

If still interested in the field, please consider the county vocational-technical school or community college as long as the program is accredited within the industry.

need help with medical billing and coding career?

We Answered:

www.ahima.org
the only nationally recognized one... the best place to go to find a list of accredited schools. Tha'ts what's important; not just going to some cheap-o fake college that is not going to get you anywhere. Places want their coders to have gone to an accredited school.

Discuss It!
