Environmental Science Career

Dianne Said:

what qualifications are needed for a career in environmental science ( mainly in climate) ?

We Answered:

Take a good course on political propaganda or political speech writing. That forms a good basis for a start. And NEVER, NEVER take any course about objective science. If you do, you'll never be a good environmentalist.

Ryan Said:

Is environmental science a growing career field?

We Answered:

No it's not.

It's an important area, but the real work is done by people w/ engineering degrees, or chmistry or biology.

Your other choices are yours. I always recommend that people making this desicion "know thyself" first and foremost. Not only your skills, but your personality type, passions, aspirations, etc.

Then do some first hand research on what those jobs will provide. Don't trust counsellors, and professors who have never worked in the field.

Dan Said:

Can you suggest an environmental science career that involves exciting and regular international travel?

We Answered:

I'm not too sure if there are many positions that would allow a lot of international travel. There are three organizations that do offer international positions and this may be a base for you to start looking.

United Nations Environment Programme (www.unep.org) or try the United Nations (www.un.org)

Environmental Defense (www.environmentaldefense.org)

European Environmental Agency (http://www.eea.europa.eu/organisation/jb…

Consider which organization offers you the better incentives. Some jobs pay well, but can be very boring. Others are exciting, but don't pay enough or at all. Realize that most employers will not offer a big paying job to a new graduate with little experience. They want someone who has been doing this kind of work for at least 5 years. It does not meant that you won't be hired anywhere, it just means that competition is going to be much higher.

Good luck.

Calvin Said:

What interests and skills might you need to have a successful career in Environmental Science?

We Answered:

Biology, chemistry, geology, math. Environmental Sci is kind of a "jack of all trades but a master of none" degree. Get into something more specialized like geology. You will make more money, be able to find a job easier, and you can still work on the environmental side.

I am a geologist, and used to work with contaminant realeases into the groundwater. Now I work with environmental problems associated with drilling oil & gas wells.
