I'm considering a career in education, but where can I find more information?

We Answered:

Teaching at the elementary and secondary (Jr. or Sr high) requires a credential from the State in which you teach. Each State has different requirements, so start by contacting the relevant State Dept of Education, Teacher Credentialing / Certification unit for the details about this.

Teacher training programs tend to be 5-year programs (includes the normal BA/BS and practice classroom teaching). Some states also require a certification exam before your are fully credentialed and can start teaching in the classroom for pay.

The key difference with Elem vs Secondary Ed (simplistically) is: Elem = single teacher, multiple subjects
Secondary = single teacher, single subject. So if going into secondary ed, having a major field coinciding with your teaching subject area is critical. Also, when teaching at the secondary level, its a good idea to diversify (be able to teach in more than one area).

In both elem and secondary levels, premiums might be paid for bilingual ability, special ed, etc.

How hard/easy it is to teach depends on how well you get along with students in the age group of your classes. So...if you are good with "little people" ...or older students...seems you want to avoid the "puberty pupils". Relating and connecting with students is a big factor in the hard/easy rating.

If you haven't already done so, check with your college http://www.wm.edu/education/
and for the Teacher certification instructions
http://www.wm.edu/education/profserv/cer…

So, get to the relevant State Dept of Education. and if you are contemplating graduating in one state to move to another state to teach...contact the destination State D of Education.

Best wishes.

How can I become involved in a career in nutrition without a strong high school education in the sciences?

We Answered:

you can go the holistic route but then you wont be able to work with doctors or in hospitals. or you can upgrade your sciences and then get accepted into the nutrition/dietitian program. ask at your university about changing majors and how you can go about doing it. they'll have all the info you need.

Career Clusters(I Scored highest in Health Science,And Education&Training).?

We Answered:

I am an "instructional designer" for a large healthcare corporation. I design online courses for nurses and other professionals to take (to keep thier certifications/licenses current, etc.). My job blends a love for computers, an aptitude for education/training (especially adult education) and a knowledge of healthcare terminology and practice. You an find out about median salaries at a website like salary.com. They would also have some job descriptions that might help. I hope this helps you. :) Good luck! (P.S. Consider "Nurse Educator" too - if you scored well in health sciences and education, you'd be a great nurse trainer or nurse educator - but you have to get a nursing degree and usually a master's to do this.)
