You can bring pretty much any kind of bag you want (or no bag at all) and no one will notice much. If you have lots of books and materials that you have to walk around with, a backback would be convenient. When I took a community college class last spring, I used a tote bag. For me personally, I'd bring at least some type of bag because otherwise I'd be losing my pens, handouts, etc.

Students at most community colleges are very diverse. Your classmates could range from 18 year olds just out of high school to people who are middle aged (or older). The younger ones will be more likely to have backbacks; the older ones would be more likely to have some other type of bag. There's such a range that just about any way you choose to bring your supplies will be fine.

Why not get both? Use a backpack for the days you have to take a lot of stuff. Use the tote for when you don't have a lot of stuff. The tote is ridiculously cheap, it's not like you're losing money by buying it in addition to the backpack.

In college, no one cares what you bring to class. Just pick something that can carry all of your books and you'll be fine.

Eastpak is the sturdiest backpack I have seen. If you go to Office Max they have ones that are specialy designed for laptops and books. They are of equal quality invest alot if you are going to carry around a laptop. As for the book load there is usually one book per class excluding English and Literature. Take into account notebooks and folders.
