When I was about 4 months pregnant with my second child my daughter fell off her bike and broke her leg. I rushed over to her grandparents house and in a panic picked her up and placed her in my car. Then I rushed her to the hospital. She was 8 years old at the time. Consequently my 8 year old and I had to spend some time in bed. I had started cramping and bleeding some from picking her up. The doctor told me I needed bedrest to prevent a possible miscarriage. I didn't miscarry. I would say my daughter weighed at least 60-70 lbs at that time.

I use a North Face Slingshot backpack. It's big enough to hold your books, and it has all kinds of extra pockets and partitions for all the extra crap (calculator, clickers, pens, umbrella, laptop, etc.) you will eventually end up carrying for class too. Honestly, when I got it, I just liked the color.

leather brief bag with a shoulder strap. they will age with you and you will have it to hand down to your children if you take care of it. one of a kinds are so unmistakable too. almost theft resistant for that reason. Everyone will know it's yours.
