Careers For College Graduates

Jared Said:

What is the quickest way for a career-changing college graduate to become a lawyer?

We Answered:

You will have to take the LSAT first. Then apply to law schools - most law schools consider your undergraduate GPA and LSAT score when determining if they will offer you a seat in their 1L (first year law student) class.

Then comes law school. Three years of it. Contracts, Civil Procedure, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Legal Writing, Property, Decedent's Estates, Constitutional Law. Reading and studying constantly (especially the first year). Mock trials, moot court.

And then you graduate. Thought you had enough of studying in law school, but then comes the BAR EXAM. Bar exams are at least 2 days of testing, but some states have 3 and 4 days of it.

Then you have to wait 3 weeks to 4 months for your results. If you pass, welcome to your new career!

Good luck!

College, Careers, Life, Graduating! SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP?!?

We Answered:

First off, I promise that this isn't a big deal at all. I know juniors at my university that have no idea what they want to do. Honestly, I am sure that most high school seniors have no idea what they want to do; the people that "have it all planned out" will almost always change their direction once they see the world a bit more. When you enroll in classes at OCCC just sign up for anything that might interest you (make sure the classes fill general education requirements). This will let you probe the waters. If you like a class, take more classes in that subject and let the interest grow. What is more, all colleges have counselors that will help you find out what you want to do. They are infinitely more valuable than online sources because they will sit down with you for a hour or more and focus on you. They are professionals and understand the demands of a student and a future career. The bottom line is: don't worry about it now, just see what you like in college.
