You can also search yourself on websites like cars.com, edmunds.com, and autotrader.com, all of which include listings from both used car dealers and private party sales. It may behoove you to search more than one, as not all dealers or individuals subscribe to more than one.

With the "cash for clunkers" program literally destroying hundreds of thousands of vehicles that would have found their way onto used car lots, many categories of used vehicles are in short supply and dealers have even taken to buying privately advertised vehicles in addition to the typical "auctions" where used vehicles are bought and sold among dealers on a wholesale basis. This means prices for many "cheaper" used cars has risen due to the short supply.

I would recommend a recent model used vehicle like a Ford Focus which may still have some of the manufacturer's original warranty to protect you from unexpected repair costs, at least for a period. You can also sometimes purchase an extended warranty as if the vehicle was new for even further protection. Many dealers will provide warranties for their used cars, but you would usually have to service the vehicle at THAT particular dealership, and that dealer will ultimately decide whether or not they want to pay for the repair.

One of the best alternatives is to buy a "certified" used vehicle. These vehicles have been safety and mechanically checked to ensure reliability and often include even longer used car warranties that would allow you to have the vehicle serviced at any dealer (of that brand) nationwide. Certified used vehicles often cost more, but the piece of mind and protection they provide against catastrophic repair bills can often be worth far more than any additional cost for the vehicle itself.
