Class Activities For College Students

Rosa Said:

College students: What would be the most important things to learn in a college orientation class?

We Answered:

I think one of the biggest shocks to me was the amount of self-discipline I had to have in college. Our professors didn't give us homework every night, give us quizzes and review sheets. It was basically, "Here's the book, read, we'll have 3 tests." I was surprised that I was responsable for so much of the learning myself. The professors usually didn't teach us anything that appeared on the tests. What else? There was a lot more reading than in high school too. Homework usually involved reading chapters in a textbook instead of worksheets or problems.

I need some ideas for in-class learning games/activities for college students?

We Answered:

This activity is called "snowball fight". Each participant writes a question or a statement about the topic you choose on a blank sheet of paper, then balls up the paper to form a snowball. On your command, they commence in a "snowball fight" until all the snowballs have hit the ground. Then each participant picks up a snowball off the ground and reads the question or statement.
If questions were required, the recipient should also try to answer the question - with any misconceptions corrected by you. If statements were required, then the recipient should state whether they agree or disagree and why or why not.

Whats a good class activity for college students?

We Answered:

A fellow teacher does this with her juniors in high school, but I think it would translate....she has them write a letter to themselves. She holds the letter for one year and then mails it to them. She provides the stamped envelopes and she has been amazed by some the things her students have said after hearing their thoughts from the year before.

If you want something with more immediate impact, perhaps you could have them make posters detailing their favorite parts of your class. These could then serve as visual aids or at least decorations for the next group that comes through.

It's hard to come up with more specific ideas without knowing more about the nature of your class. Good luck!

Give me some ideas for conducting group activities in class for college students.. some management games.?

We Answered:

Well, one game I remember was the stock market game. Give a small group a certain amount of play money (pretend) and let them compete with the other groups in the class. Watch the stock market and have them keep an eye on their companies. Let them buy and sell and keep records of losses and gains. Secretly, have one person of good choosing to monitor and record all of the troubles that come about , including the disagreements and arguements over decisions. There attention will be on the money while in the end, the class will get to observe there own behavior along with each of the other groups. Bottom line,,,, it should give them some insight into how well they can manage at this point. Good Luck

What can I do to improve my drawing ability? What do college art students do in class?

We Answered:

What the good ones "typically" do is spend a LOT of time improving their craft. They don't just spend the time in class. They go out, sketch from life, try different subjects, styles, media and PRACTICE. They especially spend a LOT of time on what they DON'T do well. They work on strengthening their weaknesses do that they gradually get better and better at what they do.

Ice breaker activities for small community college class?

We Answered:

Toilet Paper: Bring a roll of toilet paper to class and tell the students to pretend they're going on a three day camping trip. Pass around the roll and tell them each to take as much toilet paper as they think they need to last the weekend. Once everyone has toilet paper, tell them that for each sheet that took, they have to share one fact about themselves.

Starbursts: Pass around a bag of starburst and tell the students to take a handful. Once everyone has some, tell them that they have to share one fact for each one they took, and make each color a different topic. For example, red could be share something that makes you happy, orange could be share something you like to do in your free time, etc.

Good luck with your class!
