and there is only one kind of licence. full version, because the full version is also the upgrade (not like win 98 and me)

also, 32bit drivers don't work on 64bit, so be careful.

if you want 64bit wireless card drivers, asus makes 64bit drivers for thier cards. but keyboard and mouse, and video is easy to find drivers for.

forget if you have a TV card, or webcam, they'll never work on 64bit

Maya is the best followed by 3DSMax (IMO). The others you mentioned are quite good as well. There is also Houdini. Maya is quite widely used by pros and is loaded with features while others like 3DSMax require more plug-ins.

You may want to ask questions like this on Creative Cow in the app room you're interested in. The people there are newbs, pro's, and developers of the software. Great group of people and always willing to answer questions and how-to's.
