Life happens and college admissions boards know this. Especially if she does well after she recovered and is taking challenging courses, it shouldn't be much of a problem. It will definitely show perseverance. She also can prove herself through SAT/ACT scores, recommendations, and essays. She should also write a supplemental letter explaining her situation (it should be brief and not whiny). She can also include a doctor's note.
