Click on to this site http://www.nyfa.org/nyfa_current.asp?id=… which is the New York Foundation for the Arts. Look under classified/opportunities for artists. You should see listings for internships with a variety of artists and institutions, including photographers (or digital/ video artists) and galleries.

Another place to check out would be the bulletin boards at some of the photo processing places in the photo district, as well as ads placed in Gallery Guide, Photo District News and other industry periodicals. Visit International Center of Photography and inquire about internships there as well. Good luck!

It really depends on how much personal space you would require, as well as how much you value your time.

There are loads of sublet options that are inexpensive (at least by NY standards), if you don't mind sharing a flat with others. For example, there are beautiful 3 bedroom lofts that you can just rent one bedroom out of, and that dramatically cuts down on rent. If you are looking to stay by yourself, however, you would be hard-pressed to find something private for under $1000/month.

Also, time is a big issue. If you don't mind spending an hour+ to commute into Manhattan, there are much more affordable places in some of the outer boroughs, or even North NJ.

It all depends on what your priorities are!
