You could try some kind of temp work, but usually when your in college retail is your best bet, because they will work around your schedule. I know it sucks, but you won't be doing retail for the rest of your life. :) I HATED retail too, so I feel your pain.

Yea thats not true at all- theres no 6 week training course to get that kind of money (regardless of what some of these degree-mill money making companies will say). You can become an orderly- that makes decent money, its not fun work, but its good experience. Otherwise your fairly limited. You can work in a psychiatric hospital as a psyc tech- that pay isnt bad (10-12 bucks an hour) if thats your thing.
