Jobs For College Students In Los Angeles

Amanda Said:

current UCLA, USC or other Los Angeles college students?

We Answered:

UCLA gives almost no grants to out of state students. If you are low income you can get the Federal help you would get for any college: Pall Grant, subsidized loan and work study. That doesn't put much of a dent in UCLA's $40,000 out of state cost. Bottom line, it's not affordable with a job. Not even close. Out of state students need parent help or take huge private loans.

If you qualify for need based aid private colleges are a better bet. USC also gives very generous merit aid to National Merit Scholars and others with high grades/scores. Also look at Occidental, Pepperdine, the Claremont colleges and other LA area privates.

Shoud I be heading to Los Angeles?

We Answered:

Umm if you think that is the best place for you.
I moved to LA and HATED IT!! I didn't like the area or the people. It is Extremely expensive and very superficial. But I am from upstate NY (farming town) where everyone is real, civil and caring.
A good job to have during college is a receptionist or office assistant. You can always move up fast as long as the co. needs it.
I started as a receptionist and worked my up to a bookkeeper w/ in 9 months.
So SERIOUSLY weigh your options and think about this decision! But if you don't like it, you can always move. :) That's what I did. haha

Any job positions that pay more than minimum wage for college students in Los Angeles, CA?

We Answered:

If you are into office work which starts around $18-20 per hour, check out the temp job assignments offered by AppleOne and Volt.

Good luck!

Marlene Said:

Does anybody in Los Angeles know a place where they are hiring?

We Answered:

Retail stores are starting to hire for the holiday season. Walk into places you'd like to work, and that you have the skills for, and talk to the appropriate person. Don't be shy.

Where do your friends work? What about job placement through school? Do you have a resume? A school counselor should be available to help with that. Where do you frequent that there are young people working - ask them if they're hiring. Talk to people - network - that will be a big help.

Here are some listings:

Yep, there have been a lot of layoffs in the last couple of weeks with the election on the way. Unfortunately it will likely get worse before it gets better. (This time of the year there are usually firings / layoffs anyway.) But there may be more hiring of less experienced (lower wage) people, especially part time (no benefits).

Good luck!
