Peter Said:
I've already graduated, if I go back to Community College for certificates, can I defer my student loans? We Answered:
Depends on the type of loan you have, federal or private, the school you choose and the program you enroll in. Many of the short term certificates are not long enough to get aid or warrant a deferment. But why in the world would you want to do that anyway? The amount you owe would just increase.. after you get that "certificatie" you'd prob loose all the ground you'd gained since paying on that loan and owe MORE than when you actually graduated. If you have a full time job, then you can afford to pay your loans, if you can't, then you can't afford to go get those "certificates" and need to get a second job instead of going to school.
Jason Said:
Will I receive the full amount for a Stafford Loan if I'm a community college student? We Answered:
Since you were still considered a 'dependent" when you did your fafsa your loan max will not be increased to the independent amounts. You will stay at the 5500 for the YEAR.If your parents are rejected for the PLUS, you will be able to get the additional of couple of thousand dollars in Stafford loans.
Greg Said:
Can I get student loans to help with starting community college? We Answered:
Do as much as you can at a community college first, then transfer as much as you can into SDSU or San Marcos. I was a prof there for years and am quite familiar with the CCs in the SD area. Grossmont, Palomar, any of them are fine and their curricula are articulated so as to allow ready transfer into any of the Cal State campuses. Don't waste your money on a disreputable clip-joint like Phoenix or any of the for-profits. They'll run you up a student loan bill you'll probably never be able to pay off and the "degree" will be toilet paper.James Said:
student loan for community college? need advice?!?We Answered:
FAFSA isn't just about loans. If you are low on money and support yourself, they offer many grants and federal aid awards that you are not required to pay back at all.It may be a tad late for FAFSA approval, but you can only find out by contact a financial aid officer at your school and talk to them about what you can do. There are ways to put a rush on FAFSA and see if it will go through by the time you need it.
FAFSA is typically done once a year, however. The grants/loans for the 2008-2009 academic year were processed way back in April and May of 2008.
If you cannot get FAFSA, then go with a private loan. The best course would be to acquire the list of approved lenders from the college and use one of those, as they typically have the lowest interest rates and are the most forgiving as far as repayment scheduling goes.
Mary Said:
Is there any condition in which I would not receive a small student loan for community college through FAFSA?We Answered:
If you're only on probation, you still qualify. However, if you are placed on financial aid suspension, you will not qualify for any federal aid (including grants and/or loans). You don't have to pay the interest on the loan (only if you choose to while you're in school). As long as you have not defaulted on your previous loan, you should be fine. The average amount will depend on your school's cost of attendance and the amount you're eligible to borrow. If you're a sophomore, you can borrow up to $6,500 this year... or $3250 each semester. Obviously, only borrow what you absolutely need and you'll be fine.
