Are you prepared to pay all of your expenses associated with an internship? (flights, accommodation, transportation, etc.). The Canadian government doesn't have a budget line for citizens from the USA to come learn about how their civil society works.

A better idea is to look in the USA (where you probably will still have to pay your expenses). Look for opportunities in your own geographic area, or one that you could easily travel to and find housing in. Many places won't advertise internship openings -- you need to contact international nonprofit organizations, university offices that have an international focus, and businesses with an international focuses, with your CV, your goals for an internship, what skills you are offering to the organization, and what time frame you would be available. Expect to make a LOT of inquiries. Your university should also help you in finding a placement.
