Summer programs in medicine for high school students?

We Answered:

Your most important resource could be your family doctor. Leave a message for them indicating you need to ask a question when they have time. And then let them know that you are interested in medicine and would really like to do some sort of internship. They might be able to refer you to a program or a colleague who could help. Doctors have access to medical journals, associations and networks that might have the type of program you are looking for.

If that doesn’t work out call your local community hospital and ask for the volunteer coordinator. Without medical training it is unlikely that you would get to do actual medical procedures but volunteering at the hospital would give you opportunities to observe, learn medical terminology and interact with real patients. You get out of every experience what you put into it. A hardworking interested volunteer who is looking at a future medical career will be much appreciated by overworked hospital staff. Even volunteers get access to parts of the hospital that normal patients or visitors wouldn't.
