Welfare College Students

Daniel Said:

Am I eligible for welfare as a college student?

We Answered:

tj:

The program formerly known as "Welfare" is now properly called TANF, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

One of the key differences between the old "welfare" programs, and the newer TANF is the emphasis on employment - "able-bodied" TANF recipients must register for work, and most are required to participate in an employment or training program if they are not working.

The good news is that SOME college students are eligible. I can't tell you, though, if this "some" includes you, because TANF programs are administered at the state level. You'll need to contact your state office of Family and Child Services. Here, for example, is Florida's website ( http://www.myflorida.com/accessflorida/ ), which includes a "pre-screening questionnaire" that Florida residents can use to determine if they are qualified for TANF.

One useful idea would be to start here: http://govbenefits.gov That site is the Federal government's gateway to the available assistance programs - both at the federal and state level. Answer a few questions in the "Start Here" questionnaire at the top of the page, and you'll be matched with any programs that you might be eligible for.

I hope that helps you - good luck!

Eileen Said:

Are college students eligible to receive welfare?

We Answered:

Not unless you have a child. You are able bodied and can work. You have no basis to be awarded anything except, possibly, food stamps.

William Said:

can college students go on welfare? whats the requirements in ny? is there a certain type of medical welfare?

We Answered:

If you are a college student and receiving financial aid, then you're probably classified as a dependent. At least in my college, all undergraduate are considered financially dependent on their parents until graduation or only in weird circumstances, like if both of the parents are dead. Is this the case with you or are you financially independent, according to your financial aid office?
You might be eligible for Medicaid, which is the government's version of health assistance for poor and young people. Another answerer suggested that and I suggest you check it out.

My other suggestion though, if that doesn't work, would be to find a dental school in your area. Dental students will work on your teeth for a lot cheaper than a fully certified doctor. And it's perfectly safe too... they are just as qualified but without the diploma quite yet. It's how they learn/practice. My mom does it all the time. In fact, she even had a root canal done this way.

Good luck.

college students vs people on welfare?

We Answered:

Wow. I am shocked that you would post this. Have you been listening to McCain and Bush for so long that you now compare college students to welfare queens. Only Republicans will think like this. This is one of the worse questions I have seen on Y/A.
