Glenn Said:

Does anyone know of any writing contests/awards that I can apply for ? Something with a large award maybe?

We Answered:

Google it and keep an eye out for Film festivals happening in your local area.

DraMuse, because you need it :)

Jeffery Said:

Know any fiction writing contests?

We Answered:

On the Premises has one right now: http://www.onthepremises.com/current_con… The deadline is Sept. 30.

Writers of the Future is an extremely well-regarded SF/F contest that runs quarterly. Their deadline is also Sept. 30. http://www.writersofthefuture.com/contes…

Ralan's has contest listings as well: http://www.ralan.com/m.contest.php

Anita Said:

So affirmative action really that big of a deal when it comes to college admissions?

We Answered:

It is called variety. Problem is that most Asian students really do not engage much in extra curricular activities, a large majority spend their time on the SATs and trying to get high GPAs but at the end of the day if I have over 100 Asian students with 4.0s and 2400 SAT scores, of course most are going to get rejected because chances are their extra curricular activities are not so good. Being an Asian football player would really give you a great chance at the Ivies.

Black and White students often spend time in things like sports, volunteer work and doing things outside of the classroom, typically Asian students don't do that. Also Asian students apply to the top colleges in a large number while Blacks and Hispanics rarely apply to the top colleges. So if I have to fill up lets say 300 seats for Asian students but there are 1500 Asian students applying, there are going to be a lot of mad and disgruntled Asian students when decisions come out.

If I have to fill up 300 seats for Blacks students and only 310 Black students apply, lets just say my decision will be very easy.

Affirmative action is not going to affect you that much. See, it doesn't only come down to race but also income, gender, and location. A student from NYC will have to be nearly perfect to get into Harvard while a student from Montana can get into Harvard with a 3.7 GPA and a 2100 SAT score, same with a student in the deep south because those areas are not well represented. So regional diversity plays a huge role when it comes to selections, being from an area where not many students apply to the top schools really helps you out a lot. An Asian student from Mississippi has a better chance of getting into Yale than a Hispanic student from NYC.

Lets be honest, who would want to go to Harvard if it was full of Asians and Whites? We need diversity.

Kent Said:

Can an experienced college student/grad chance me at USC?

We Answered:

In all honesty, I can only call you a "Maybe" candidate. You clearly are qualified to succeed at numerous institutions; however, your stats (by Tier-1 standards) are in the middle, more or less. Applying undecided is a good choice, as many majors are more difficult to enter than others. Ultimately, I'd give you a seventy percent chance at receiving admission.

Allison Said:

If a student enters a writing contest, would it help them have a better chance for college?

We Answered:

If you win, mention it on your accomplishments on your application, by all means. Colleges cherish students who can write!

Sidney Said:

Where can I find legitimate writing contests, search for them on a local basis, and any other tips?

We Answered:
