I'm a high school senior and I bought an Inspiron 1526 for $600 from Best Buy in July. However, if price does not matter, I'd shoot for an XPS. I believe they're the top-of-the-line laptops that Dell makes.
As for my laptop, it seems very durable and I've brought it to school countless times and it's worked perfectly.

Don't get a Mac... I think they are great b/c the whole no virus thing but they are way to expensive for a highschooler... If you want cheap get a Dell... I personally don't like Dell but their cheap... just remember you get what you pay for. Look at the Best Buy adds they have deals on laptops all the time. I have a Compaq (not my choice it was a gift) its a good computer for kids. HP is good (HP owns compaq.) Since you don't need it for downloading and games you don't really need the Duel Core Processor and your not going to need a whole lot of memory. If later you want to add memory you can. I would get my kid a HP probably.

Hiiiii. :] Well, I'm in high school and I just got a new laptop. If you only need to use it at home and once in a while in school, I'd suggest a Toshiba Satellite or a Compaq. Mine's a Compaq cq60-211dx. I got mine for 300 and the Toshiba also have ones that are 300. Just look for them during holidays! They're about 15 inches. The battery isn't great, but it's what's the price is. It might be a bit heavy, but hey, you're in high school and not college. So hopefully, you shouldn't need a laptop too much. ^-^ Imagine all the books and everything already! Anyways, just get a cheap laptop like Compaq or Toshiba. Take good care of it and you shouldn't be seeing any of the complaints the bad users are claiming. I love my laptop because it's so shiny and it's very responsive...maybe it's just because I've been a such a bad owner to my desktop. So yeah, I learned my lesson about taking care of computers so I'm good w/ my 300 dollar laptop. Get one at Bestbuy or Walmart. :D And say no to all those warranties, etc. Really unncessary. For antivirus, try AVG on download.com instead of buying. For Microsoft, try openoffice (Google their website). :]

A cheap, bang for your buck laptop would be a HP (Hewlett Packard). Dell and Apple are overpriced, especially for the needs of a high school student.

Choosing a good laptop for you depends on what features you need. If you're looking for something small, cheap, and with 512MB of memory, then the HP mini 1000Mi series would be good for you. This computer is also Energy-star qualified. Plus, it has an integrated webcam and mic.

But if you want something ultra-portable, you can get the HP Pavilion dv4t Series. It has all the same features as the mini but is more portable for on the go work.

Like I said though, the best way to choose a laptop is to know what features you need and want.
