not a laptop! for what you want, i'd buy a nice desktop. make sure it has a good video card and at least 2 gigs of ram (ready access memory) but for the best bang for your buck, contact your local geek and have them help you build one. much much cheaper, and powerful :)

update: don't get a mac! you'll regret it. try to get the specs i have for about $600 on a mac. impossible. i've got a quad core, 4 gigs of ram, and nvidia gefoce 9800 gtx. smokin fast :) and avast anti virus is amazing and free

A high school student shouldn't need a computer. The family computer should be just fine. Many schools wouldn't allow her to take it to class anyway. It would be a distraction.
