First Jobs For High School Students

Olga Said:

Why not employ the High School Students?

We Answered:

It's true. I worked at McDonalds when I was in HS. Now, the same McDonals employs older immigrants (not sure if legal or not, don't care either).

It was an awesome place to work back in the day. Decent money for a kid, lots of hot tail worked there, our managers were cool.

Customers were asses sometimes, but when you have a cool crew with whom to commiserate, it's all good...

I also cleaned toilets when right after I got my undergrad BS in Business. Let's see what menial job I can find now that I have a professional degree...

Ideas for a good part time job as a high school student?

We Answered:

My kids got jobs at an amusement park while still in high school. They learned several jobs and got use to answering questions from all age groups and working different positions. I tried to keep them from fast food jobs...not that there is anything wrong with that. The best advice I can give is to not have too many jobs. It looks bad on your resume to see you hopping from job to job. My kids now work as a manager for Sam's, one is in home health care, one is a physical therapist, a teacher, one works for a cell phone tower company. None worked in fast food. proud DAD!

High School Students and Federal Income Tax?

We Answered:

The reason that nothing has been taken out for federal taxes is because your income for the week (or whatever time span you have for paychecks) is lower than the minimum level for that particular deduction. Your employer (or her accountant) has a chart to use for how much to deduct for the different taxes; since federal isn't a straight percentage, it often does end up zero for lower incomes.

Truthfully, you probably won't have enough income for 2009 to be required to file anyway. (Assuming that your mom is claiming you as a dependent.) The amount for 2008 was $5,450; the amount for 2009 will be slightly higher, and it sounds like you won't come anywhere close to that line. Since your employer hasn't taken out any federal, that saves you from filing just to get back what you paid in. (State would be another question - if she's taken out for that, you might want to file state... or be required to, depending on which state you live in.) So I wouldn't worry about the federal taxes.

As for your name spelled wrong... the accountant really does need to get that fixed. It shouldn't make too much difference, but just to be on the safe side - the IRS does sometimes get a bit persnickety if the name on the W-2 doesn't match up with the name on the Social Security card.

Hope that helps! :-)

There are many companies which allow high school students to work as part timer in their company. It is the decision of the student to look for good and decent job which can pay him good amount for his work. Doing part time can also give his some idea about the work in the organizations and how to deal with it.
