Grade School Reading

Theodore Said:

Switched on school house 8th grade summer reading list?

We Answered:

I don't think that there is a summer reading list with Switched on Schoolhouse curriculum. Go to your local library. They usually can give you a list of books for your grade level.

Janice Said:

Why do people in America graduate from high school with fourth grade reading level?

We Answered:

Well, I think one reason is just the fact that most kids see reading as a chore or assignment rather than something enjoyable; therefore, they don't like to read. Obviously, kids aren't going to spend their free time doing something they don't like to do.

Also, in school now we really don't need to read as much as students may have read in the past. (This goes for my school, anyways...) There are reading assignments, but the students don't necessarily need to read the book/poem/whatever in order to pass the test they take on the reading. For instance, my English class is expected to read a selection for a certain day, and then on that day we discuss what we've read in class. Following this system makes it unnecessary for most of the students to actually read the piece - if only 5 students read it, those 5 can carry out the discussion; the ones that didn't read it only have to take notes on what's being said.

Pauline Said:

Where can I find materials for high school students reading below grade level?

We Answered:

There is a series of books called
what your --th grader needs to know
[fill in the blank]
books go from kindergarten to 7th grade
I believe the author is Hirsch
Also the old fashioned and out of date McGuffey reader is still the best and can be found on ebay
Also contact Christian Light Publications in Harrisonburg VA
They are a Mennonite publishing house with homeschooling materials broken down into specifics that can catch your kids up from where they are now
