How do you need to become a high school teacher?

Hello! I'm currently working on getting my Education Degree in Manitoba, Canada. The requirements differ depending on where you live so I would highly advise you to look at colleges/universities in your area and check out the requirements.

But, to give you an idea, here you need to complete at least 3 years of University/classes with a major and minor in a "teachable subject area" (for example: math, music, english, biology, history, etc). Then, you need to apply into the Faculty of Education and do 2 years there. So, in Manitoba, it takes a minimum of 5 years of full time university classes to become a certified teacher.

As for your question regarding elementary school teachers/high school teachers, there is no additional schooling. You are just required to take different classes. For potential High School teachers you take a major and minor (I took music and english), but for elementary/middle school teachers you take a mixture of courses on a variety of different subjects.

I'm not sure if it's the same where you live, but here once you get your teaching certificate upon graduation you are certified to teach any subject and any grade. So even though I spent 6 years studying to be a high school english or music teacher I could technically teach kindergarten.

Hope that helps! :)
