The laptops are being given out to each student now (starting with year 9). Students are going to be VERRRYY disappointed as they are for school only (no downloading, no games, internet browser is screaned, no yahoo, youtube, facebook etc, no CD rom access) - work, powerpoint, excel and thats about it.

Unless you are working and earning more than 11K, you cannot claim the laptop, your parents will have to and there is no requirement for them to give you money they get back from the government.


EDIT: Parents can claim a rebate for the computer if the HOUSEHOLD income is less than 100K.

I think they shouldn't get their own laptop but they can have a free laptop to use in school, and they have to give it back after they graduate (or they can buy it from the school).

Some public high schools do have them. It depends on the area the school is located in and if they pull in enough tax dollars and donations to get them. In other words, if the school district and students parents are rich. I believe they basically belong to the school though and not the student.

No, I was never given a laptop in school and I think there would be too much playing on them instead of working. Plus, they need to learn how to work for a laptop that way they will appreciate it and take care of it properly.
