A lot of jobs hold greater responsibility than you might think. The IT manager at your company is responsible for keeping the network up and running and the servers available. In places like hospitals this can literally mean life or death, while in other businesses if can mean millions of dollars are lost due to the network being unavailable. I have worked in a commodities brokerage for instance where millions of dollars depended on a few points move in the market. If the traders didn't see it because the network was down... heads rolled!
Think about the phone network, one 911 call can be life or death for some one. An electrician who wires a house or business can cause the loss of that house or business as well as the loss of lives of the occupants and firefighters going into the fire.
How about a cook in a kitchen? Food poisoning can kill and leaving out the sea food when it should be refrigerated could cause someones death.
Even the job of stocking the shelves in the grocery store is important. If they are poorly stocked people will not be as apt to buy there. Lack of customers is a sure way to close any business.
In business look at the havoc caused by people handing out loans to people who could not pay them back. Right now the world is in a financial crisis because business people did their jobs poorly.

Experience does count. Putting an arbitrary limit on it is questionable. A mechanic who has done a couple of thousand brake jobs is far less likely to miss something or make a mistake because he has already done it or seen it done. How do you differentiate between one who has done a hundred and one who has done a thousand? The usual method is by how long the mechanic has been doing them... If one guy has 3 years at Brake Masters, and the other applicant has 10 years at a dealership who has the most brake experience? Generally you point that out in your resume though.

The reason for the comparison to doctors/surgeons is because it is an easy analogy. After all, they still call the guy that graduated at the bottom of his medical school class Doctor.

The reason they are looking for experience is because that is the amount of experience the employer believes will have exposed you to many of the situations you would be expected to handle in that position. While you may believe that your mistake is not a life/death situation, your mistake may be the lawsuit that causes the business to go broke. That's a mistake the employer wants to be sure you aren't going to make.

yes, I think it is. You might want to specify what type of growth. Perhaps try to make it less general, but it sounds fine.
