you may want to consider volunteering at a hospital because you're getting into a profession that has to deal with medicine and you could see how it affects people. Once you apply to colleges having volunteer experience in a hospital may make you look more appealing.

I was a hospital volunteer for a couple of years in high school. There wasnt any particular dept we worked in. There was the volunteer program and you wore pagers and went to whatever dept paged you and needed your help.

My suggestion is to look and see if your school has an ROP or occupational job placement program. I did the nursing assistant program and not only did I get to pick what dpts I wanted to work in and do actual on the job patient care, but I left the program with my nursing assistant certification and a lot of experience. It was totally free, too.

Since being a psychiatrist involves med school, you have time. Look for hospital volunteer jobs when you are in college. There is not that much for you to do as a volunteer in a psych hospital anyway. You can do other related volunteer jobs such as in a homeless shelter, boys & girls club, battered womans's shelter etc. Psych has many facets & helping just lost people is one of them
