I had friend who volunteered at Raritan Bay while we were in high school. You don't say where in Jersey you are, so I can't get too specific but call your local hospital and ask what kind of volunteer programs they have. A nursing home would be good, too; I volunteered at one in middle school, and it certainly wasn't my cup of tea but since you plan to persue a career in nursing it would be a good experience for you.

I think that you may be thinking of an internship versus just volunteering. Most universities will accept any kind of volunteering as community service on college applications, whether or not it pertains to your possible major. Ease to it, an internship or volunteering for an outpatient mental health clinic could be daunting and frightening for a young student. Try volunteering with disabled adults or elderly people, something that will introduce you to the mental health field. My friend that is a clinical psychologist started internships in low income mental health facilities after she got her masters. She said it was extraordinarily tough, but, it helped her to figure where she wanted to go in her field.
