We Answered:

International students with an F-1 visa only need to get their visa renewed if it expires *and* they depart the United States. This is because any person who requests entry into the United States with a expired visa will be denied admission.

If your F-1 visa expires, you will still be in status providing that your I-20 is current and valid. Although as I said previously, if you depart the U.S. with an expired visa, you must get it renewed before re-entering.

All renewal of F1 visas are done at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad. This requires going through the entire interview process again, including the visa application forms, submitting eviedence of funds etc and waiting for your passport/(new) visa to be returned to you.

I'm an international student right now in Denmark studying at the University of Copenhagen and I lived last year at my apartment with many international and ELS students in Berkeley where I study at UC Berkeley. Having experienced what it's like to be both a native student interacting with international students and being an international student myself, I believe that international students are great. Bringing another culture abroad, another language or another way of life is always interesting and I think that most people react positively to international students and even gravitate towards them because international students are different and can be exciting.

At my school I think we treated international students well and the ones I met loved their time in California and being with us native students. I personally really enjoyed talking to international students because they were excited to be somewhere new and wanted to do new things so I was kind of a guide. I lived with some students from Korea and Japan and they loved being over here and I liked talking to them and helping them with their english as well and I think they really enjoyed their time at my school.

Any college will do, but it's good to apply to several. You will increase your odds of securing funding for at least one school if you apply for several schools. Many colleges will fund you based on your background and the diversity you can bring to the school. Good luck! (also look for scholarships available outside of the school while you're at it)
