Jennifer Said:

Credit card limit for international student?

We Answered:

I wouldn't think so.

Working at a large bank in the credit department, I can tell you there was a limit of $2500 for students up to the grad level. And then for medical, law, or dental students the limit could go as high as $5000, but never higher than that until they graduated.

And to get an $8000 credit limit you would need to have an income of about 45-50k on average. For lower income levels you can look to get about 5k for every 30k of income (when you're not a student).

Another thing to consider is do you have an American credit file? You can still get credit if you don't have one (you will have to fax in verification of SSN/tax ID, name, birth date, and physical street address).

Apply, but you probably will get a credit limit of $500-$1000.

Donna Said:

which is the better student credit card?

We Answered:

If you must have a credit card, get one with no annual fee and which pays you back.

Personally, I use a Citibank Platinum Dividend Select Mastercard, which pays back 5% on gasoline, supermarket and drugstore purchases, 1% on everything else.

Use any credit card with extreme caution. If you don't pay your balance off in full (and on time) every month, the interest rates and fees will dwarf any benefit you will get from using the card. Most people make the mistake of thinking a credit card will stretch their money because they can buy things they don't have the money for. That's dead wrong. It doesn't stretch your money; it *shrinks* it. The reality is that you not only have to pay for what you bought, but interest on top of it. As a result, you'll eventually wind up paying $121 for something that you initially charged for $100. It's not a good way to live. Don't get in over your head.

What would happen if an international student movin back to his home country w/ unpaid US credit card debt?

We Answered:

Lucky you. Debt collectors have no authority to collect debts outside of the US.
Yes, bad debts are reported for 7 years after the date that they first became delinquent. After that your slate is clean again.
