There are hundreds of British students applying to Harvard every year, the uni is very familiar with GCSEs and A'levels. They will be able to assess you quite easily from your grades. To give you an idea, you will need nine A or A* at GCSE to be competitive. Similar to Oxford.

And your mum is right (isn't she always?), American unis do need to see activities in addition to your academic work. Examples might be sport, art, writing or debate. They are looking for leadership qualities so teamwork is valued.

Harvard has 'needs blind' acceptance meaning that, if they offer you a place, they guarantee to find you funding if your parents' income is low enough but it does have to be quite low for them to do this. I have a friend whose family is quite hard up that got no funding at all at Harvard as their house was worth too much. Other unis are less generous and you will definitely pay a lot more than you would to go to Oxford even with financial aid.

Most American unis will require an SAT which you will sit in the UK after GCSE and which you should prepare for as the Maths is really just a speed test. The better unis will also require two SAT ll subject tests which you will do during your A'level year. The choice is tough as most are subjects that you won't know anything about.

Americans don't take a gap year, uni is four years and they call some unis 'college' just to confuse us poor Brits.

Sorry to disappoint you, but unless you are educated in the US Harvard will not accept you. They say that specifically on their web site:

"Foreign students who have studied for at least one year at an accredited institution in the United States or Canada, and have completed the requirements, are eligible to apply at HMS. International applicants should make every effort to take the majority of required courses at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada. Foreign students who do not have a baccalaureate or advanced degree from an institution in the U.S. or Canada are rarely offered admission."

I'm pretty certain that all of them would insist on knowing that you can use the Shift key on your keyboard to type an upper case letter when spelling proper nouns such as Stanford or Harvard when it is appropriate.

Try searching for their graduate school application. They have excellent financial aid, at least for undergraduate students, so I believe they would have good financial support for graduate students too. If you feel that you really might get in, consider applying to other high-ranked US schools too. Harvard is great, but great is the arrogance at that institution too. It may be stifling to your studies.
