No they cant. What happens here is that the threshold for having private health insurance (in relation to income) is removed. So all overseas students have to have health insurance, not just those who earn over 70K. Australian singles who earn over 70K and DONT have private insurance get slugged EXTRA tax.

It depends on your need. If all you need the insurance is for showing your school that you have health insurance then purchase the "international student health insurance" otherwise go with the regular health plans.

The reason is that the international student health insurance normally cost less but has a crappy deductible. On the other hand regular insurance may cost more but the deductible is good as well. So God forbid, if you have to go to a doctor, your insurance will be useful.

You should also start your search by looking at the local insurance providers first.
