Some students go abroad because completing an education in another country or certain countries has prestige and looks good on a resume, but some also do it to learn another language like English (which might also be good for their careers) and to learn about another culture. Going to school in another country might help in immigration if that person is interested in working and/or getting citizenship in that country. Getting an education abroad might also help the person to get a job in that country or at least help them to get a good job in general.
In general, studying abroad presents a lot of challenges that have a lot of benefits when students overcome them, like independence, a more worldly perspective, a different outlook on their native country, learning to respect another culture, gaining fluency in another language and in general, adapting to new and different situations.

Yes, you need a PPS number to register with a doctor, to open a bank account and pretty much everything else.

You need your current passport or national identity card, a letter from your college/university showing that you are registered for a course and evidence of your address in Ireland (a bill or rental agreement is usually enough). If you have a visa, bring that too.

It takes about 10 days to three weeks to get your PPS no. You find your nearest social welfare office on this site:

You will find that only community colleges do not require students to take the SAT.

However, you will not find any community college or university that will accept international students without the TOEFL who are:

- Not lifetime residents of English speaking countries (Australia, Canada, Ireland, U.K. or New Zealand) or,

- Do not hold an associate degree from an American community college or,

- Have not graduated from an American high school that they attended at least two years or,

- Have not passed a U.S. General Education Development (GED) test.
