I faced the same situation when I applied to grad school years ago in clinical psychology. many graduate schools obtain grant funding and prestige through research publications, not graduating highly qualified practitioners.

But there are plenty of good grad schools that do have clin. psych programs. The truth is you do not have to attend a high prestige school to obtain an outstanding education in clin. psych., although there are fairly prestigious schools with such programs. You just have to do some looking to find these schools.

It is important to find a grad. school that values clin. psychologists who want to be excellent direct service practitioners. Otherwise, you can feel like you are treated as a second-class citizen. If you know some psychologists who engage in direct service, ask them about schools they recommend. Also you may be able to google some programs, then follow-up with phone calls. If possible, talk to some recent grads from some of these programs.

You may also want to check for programs that emphasize the degree of PsyD, doctorate in psychology. These degrees still offer a doctorate, but they are direct service oriented rather than research oriented. The courses are more relevant for those entering private practice, and as far as I can tell, the degree is regarded no less favorably than a PhD.

So persevere! You will find what you need.

I would suggest you try and contact Les Stocker ( MBE ) from St Tiggywinkles in the UK.

Not sure about courses, but without doubt, Les is the foremost expert on Hedgehogs in the UK, not to mention wildlife rescue in general. If you could get a placement with him you will learn more about hedgehogs, on a 'hands on' basis, than you will anywhere else.

His book 'Practical Wildlife Care' published by 'Blackwell Publishing' is considered as our first point of reference with wildlife casualties

Send an email, let them know you are interested in the Masters program, specifically interested in their research. Ask questions about what they do, plan to do over the next few years, and if they are taking on graduate students.
