In general I would tell you that you should care about statistics because you will be presented with many different statistics and results that claim to be statistically justified. It is surprising how many statistics are misleading because someone made a mistake in their analysis or did it correctly and found a way of presenting bad results in a positive light. As a statistician I find so many issues with reports and studies that if makes me sick. I would tell you that you should care about statistics at least enough to know if you're being snowed by someone in your professional life. Statistics are wonderful and the whole field of probability and statistics is very rewarding. That is why I earned a MS in statistics and am going after my PhD in statistics right now.

Janice Said:

What would be a good graduate program for a statistics & financial economics double major?

We Answered:

An MBA.

Gerald Said:

Could I take a low level statistics course during my graduate program instead of during my undergrad years?

We Answered:

If undergraduate statistics is a requirement for admission to the graduate program, it has to be taken and passed, sometimes with a minimum specified grade, before you begin the graduate program. The graduate school wants students to have sufficient knowledge of statistics on their first day of graduate school. Graduate schools are much tougher about this sort of requirement than are undergraduate schools for the reason that the graduate schools know what background is required to understand their very difficult courses.

If statistics is not a graduate admissions requirement, you still should try to get it out of the way in undergraduate school so that you will not have to take time for it in graduate school where twelve units is usually a full load and knowledge of it may be useful on the first day of classes.

If I major in Public Health, what graduate programs will be available for me?

We Answered:

I just want to say that this is an awesome career path I am currently going to school for Journalism and I am thinking about picking up my second degree in Public health.

I am thinking about entering the medical field as well.

Why not get a B.A. in Public health minor in science and enter med school which is what I might do.

Michelle Said:

what are some good interdisciplinary graduate school programs?

We Answered:

You do NOT sound crazy! It sounds like you'd thrive in a public administration grad program.

If your GREs are great, and if you can get some outstanding letters of recommendation from your undergraduate professors, your interests in media and public policy as well as your strengths in computer models and statistics would make you quite appealing as a candidate for any MPA program.

The MPA program that is consistently ranked best in the US is through the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. Check out its website, and make sure to check out the faculty and their specializations.
