Alternatively, maybe a hostel if you want it cheap!

Click on short term accommodations. There are tons of people renting out their room for a descent price for 1 to 3 weeks or more. With this economy alot of people would love some extra cash.

If you cannot find accommodations that you want, then post an ad on the wanted sign. Usually you will receive tons of offers. I have done this twice and had great experience.

London is the most expensive city in the UK so it would be more expensive, on average, to rent a flat there. The council tax depends on the council in the city you are living and what type of property you are living in...Birmingham would probably be cheaper.
