College Student Housing

Lee Said:

Are there dorms or student housing at Brown College in Brooklyn Center?

We Answered:

Yes, but chances are that by now, they'll be all booked up and you'll have to be put on the waiting list if you're truly interested.

Charlotte Said:

Where is the best housing for a college student working in Los Angeles?

We Answered:

Try Fantasyland. Tell them Walt sent you.

We see this every day in this forum: Everyone wants to move here, and is looking for “cheap/affordable and safe". However, such a place just doesn’t exist; the two terms are mutually exclusive. It's all about supply and demand: If it's in SoCal, then it's not going to be cheap to begin with. If it's a safe area, then it's more expensive.

If you want to live here and enjoy the weather, then you have to pay for it. You put up with the smog and the traffic, enjoy the weather and pay your rent or mortgage. My advice is to start checking out craigslist, rent.com, and apartments.com if you are looking to rent. You’ll quickly see that the minimum rent for a non-war zone is about $900-$1,200 per month for a studio or 1BR. Really nice areas (like the West LA area) easily run $2500 or more. Want to live near the beach? Expect to pay a premium.

This is not at all logical of feasible. The best place to try this is at the Oakwood Apartments in Toluca Hills. They rent month to month, for folks like you. www.oakwood.com.

Carolyn Said:

How can I find college-student-type housing that is likely to have a decent landlord?

We Answered:

Most schools will have a facility that will tell you who rents to students and provides commentary from renters.

Start there ... that's part of the benefit for paying tuition.

I hope this helps.

Courtney Said:

Can an online college student get in to cheap student housing?

We Answered:

You need to contact these places and ask them specifically. My guess would be that certain apartment complexes offer housing to students of certain schools (usually schools that are nearby and have an established relationship with the owners).

Schools will often subsidize housing at off-campus locations. This means that, for example, UT Austin will pay the owners of an apartment complex a certain amount of money to rent a certain amount of apartments to their students (effectively making housing more affordable for members of the university community). In cases like this, you wouldn't qualify.

Does college student housing allow a single mother to have her child with her?

We Answered:

It depends on the campus. My niece went to Wright State during her pregnancy, and after her son was born, the school put her up in student housing which basically was a single-family apartment *on campus*. Her financial aid covered it.

Check with the school in question.
