I went to school in Japan and lived in Japan for too long stopped counting the years. Don't be too confused. Japanese girls are like that. And I don't think that thing you called "dual personality" is really like what you think, it's just a separation between private life and work/school. Rather than trying to decipher whether or not she's interested in dating you, make her your friend, ask her out (as a friend) to a movie or out the park. A group outing with friends is a great means of spending time with someone without putting the on the pressure. Spending time together (outside of work/school) is a good way to develop a good friendship, then perhaps once that is a reality, both of you will be more comfortable and certain in expressing your interest in one another.

I've no idea what she wants or expects from you, in spite of reading your statement 4 times now.

You seem to be highly curious about her and her life! And up to a point I can understand, but I'd be inclined to challenge you on what you might want from out of this 'association' ....if you cannot just let it be what it is, 'an association'.

Given your association and it's various research areas, I'd have thought that your question had some validity for your actually questioning her on the language she uses and her understandings of it.

Cultural differences can be seemingly minor until the backgrounds of them are explored and reasons uncovered, and then they gain different proportions.

It might help you if you could find someone from her culture who speaks better English (for example) and have him / her try to maybe explain such behaviour. But with that said, it could just be a / her personality quirks.
