Rat proof your room, and show her what you have done to prevent the rats from causing damage to your room. Explain to her that rats need exercise and that keeping the cooped up in their cage all day can make them bored. It's just like being kept in your room all day. Eventually you want out. Ensure her you will clean up after the rats if they make a mess and that you will keep your room as clean as possible. If you cannot get her to come around, you can do one of 2 things. You can find a place that they can run around that isn't on the floor (like a folding table, in the bathroom [easy to clean], your desk, or your bed). You can also buy or make a playpen. If you buy a playpen, I reccomend Martin's playpens. I have one and I really enjoy it because it has a lid. Which means if I have to run to the bathroom, I can leave them alone. If you want to build one, search around for large cardboard boxes and tape them together. Using a playpen will keep them in a confined space so that you don't need to worry about the rats causing damage. If you make the playpen large enough, you could sit inside with the rats to play. You could lay a sheet or plastic down so that the rats do not pee or poop in the carpet.

Good luck convincing your mom. A rats exercise is very important.
