I suffered from cheap uncomfy mattresses whilst living in student accommodation too. Not as bad as you by the sounds of it though.

The link above is a cheap mattress topper but I would recommend the memory foam ones, just search for them on ebay or Amazon, it will be a worthy investment.

As for cheap eating - rather than buying from the supermarket, buy fresh meat from a local butcher, you'll find it's much more affordable. Same with veggies, buy from a greengrocer if you have one, or a local market - you get more for your money. Make stews and soups with oxo stock and add chopped veg, onions, garlic, meat and flavour with whatever seasoning you like. Personally I love cumin seed.
