Well, if you like asian food than china town ( canal st. and flushing) is a good spot to get cheap deal and great portion.I been to sydney and Melbourne and think that you can find a better deal on food here. I also think clothing in usa is much cheaper than Australia when comparing the same type of clothes. There are lots of discount brand name clothing store in nyc (tj max,Burlington coat factory,marshall,ross,century 21). If you stay in bk,queen then you probably save more rent money. Also you can find roommate to help save rent.(Craigslist is pretty good).Nyc sale tax is high at 8.875. If you smoke then the cigarette is pretty expensive there.This is some of the stuff in notice when i went to live there for a couple month.Hope this help.

I'm from Melbourne too and want to live in NYC. Avoid Manhattan cause that is pricey as. Get some roommates from AUS and live in Brooklyn or Queens. America is a fast food nation so just work at one of the million fast food restraunts to support your slice of the rent.

They have a tab for sublets and temporary as well and I'm always seeing something for Summer sublets there. And don't be afraid to expand your horizons to neighboring boroughs or even New Jersey or Fairfield county in CT. Public transportation is always easy in NYC and you may end up saving a few $$$. good luck and maybe I'll run into you out downtown! LOL!
