A card is ok if you can pay off the balance each month. It might even help your credit rating (FICO score) in the long run depending on any loans you have.

No reason to trust the the card issuers though unless you understand the legalese. And very few people do.

And remember that the card issuers can change terms almost any time they want by notifying you ahead of time.

It's a racket, but one people need, or think they do.

Again, if you can pay off the balance each month, ok?

Ironically credit card companies call people who pay off the entire balance each month as deadbeats. Irony.

Yes, you are. Most credit card companies will allow you to sign up for a credit card (in fact many of them have deals with many colleges to advertise them on their campuses).

Make sure you only use them for emergencies though. Its very easy to start using them on other things (random electronics, bar tabs, etc). The student loan debt is bad enough when you graduate, dont end up with a couple grand of cc debt too.

Although I wouldn't recommend doing it this way, one way to get it done is to take out a department store credit card, only because they are generally the easiest to get. My boyfriend, on the other hand, started out with a Firestone only credit card, so that whenever his car broke down he could still find a way to get it fixed without needing the funds up front. This built up his credit and kept him rollin' as long as the payments were in on time and it was payed down quickly.
