Finance Direct Student

Ella Said:

I failed my third year at university (UK) can I get finance to retake the year?

We Answered:

Hi there,

Don't worry! The same thing happened to me. I was lazy in my second year, and failed and had to repeat. I was on a 4yr sandwich course. The Student Loans Company (and SFD/LEA) did contribute to my finance when i repeated the year. I think generally they are willing to fund one repeated year, but no more, so don't mess up again or you're on your own!

If you are worried, give them a call to find out (your LEA can also give you advice) or speak to either Student Services in your university, or the Students' Union, as they will be able to help advise you on how to secure funding for your repeated year.

Good luck, and don't worry about it. Failing a year was (in the end) the best thing that happened to me (but that's another story).

Best wishes,

Mr F

Student finance - change of circumstance?

We Answered:

I got approved a while ago, when I applied for the course I wanted the Fee for it was £3,070, then a couple of weeks ago I got an email from the University saying, "Oh sorry due to blah blah blah, something or other, the Fee has risen to £3,145"

Okay so by now all my Student Finance has been approved and then I have to get in touch with them again and get them to change it to £3,145.

I think no matter what happens to you, you will always get what you asked for although, i'm not liking the idea of the interest fee's being doubled starting this year. Last year it was 2.4%, now it's 4.8%, we have to pay a hell of a load extra.

Oh yea, should you not have fully got accepted to the course you wanted before applying for student finance, I applied for my course in October and applied for my Student Finance in March, which was the earliest time possible, either way, a foundation year will cost the same as a normal one, it just means that now you have 4 years instead of 3.
