Rather than choosing what's best for a beginner, go for what's an industry standard: HP 12C

You'll have to learn a new notation (Reverse Polish Notation), but it's fairly easy to pick up. If you wanted to calculate 2+2 for example, rather than typing "2" "+" "2" "Enter", you type "2" "Enter" "2" "+".

This calculator is so good that it is one of only two calculators allowed on the CFA exam as well as other financial certification exams.

Knowing some people who work in the area of financial aid, you'll need to take 12 hours to be considered a full-time student to qualify for any grants, loans, or scholarships. There are exceptions, and believe it or not, it could be through your state representative or your state senator. Contact their office directly by phone and inquire if there are any programs to help single mothers. Not knowing what state you live in, I suspect you just might get lucky and catch a break.
