You certainly need to renew the passport first - an expired one will not be usable.

Last year my first payment was due on the day I enrolled, it went in 2 days later. The next two payments did go in on the dates in the letter though. I've still got my award letter from last year, just had a look at it & it says,

"You will receive your first payment within 3 to 4 working days of your attendance being confirmed to us by your university or college, however you will not be paid before your expected payment date. All other payments should also be paid into your account within 3 to 4 working days of your expected payment date."
