I'm at Brighton Uni & student accommodation/halls are dotted all over over the place. Some are on campus but the vast majority are elsewhere, either a short walk or train ride away or the uni run a free shuttle bus. Most of the people in halls tend to be 18-21, at least that seems to be the case at Brighton. As a mature student you don't have to live off campus, it's up to you. It's probably worth applying for a place in halls & have a look at house/flat sharing as well. I have my own place but some of my friends stayed in halls for a couple of months whilst finding somewhere else to live.

I'd expect that with private halls your money is as good as anyone else's! They certainly wouldn't be means tested like university provided accommodation might be.

If you are moving into student accommodations and will be sharing a bathroom, make sure you get yourself some rubber flip flops, a good towel and robe, and some sort of basket that you can load up your toiletries into.

Having been a contractor in this sort of industry in the past I would advise the following guide lines are followed;
1/ At least 48 hours in advance of any work work being carried out a notice is displayed advising all residents as to what is going to happen.
2/ If any individual is unhappy about a person entering their room on their own the University should be informed by the student and be chaperoned by a University representative.
3/ Unfortunately in this day & age most workmen are just that-male & there is very little we can do about it if ladies do ot apply for the jobs.
4/ Ask your University to ensure that all contractors have a full CRB check.
5/ It is never a good idea to leave purses & other valuables out in your room, some of your fellow students could be the light fingered one!
