NY uses real estate brokers for rentals, almost exclusively. You will need to hire an agent to find you a place within your budget. It will be very tough given that you only want it for a couple of months, you are not a desirable tenant. If you are medium market (4-5000 USD a month) it will be somewhat easier then bargain rentals.

Whatever you do, don't fall for companies that "help" you find a place to rent for the supposedly small fee of (enter outrageous amount of money here), you will lose your money and never find a place through them.

There are plenty of places like Craigslist as mentioned, Latimes.com and maybe Laweekly.com that will provide you with the information you need and it's free.

You could just rent in Hollywood, the place has a price scale of really cheap to really expensive within a span of a few blocks. But I recommend Silverlake or Los Feliz. It's a bit pricier but still within the area and you'll have a nice experience because they're relatively chill neighborhoods.
