Only go through a reputable letting agent or if you know the area where you would like to live contact the local authority Housing Options Team and ask for a list of accredited landlords and that way when you arrive you will have a property to live in. There are a lot of con artists out there who will take your money and leave you high and dry with nowhere to live.
