I live in St. Catharines, but grew up in Thorold - they are side-by-side, but Thorold is cheaper for housing, and is less crowded. But also, this means there are less services. Since they are so close together, this really isn't a problem. It takes me less than 15 minutes to get to Thorold from my house in St. Catharines.
Thorold has a large Italian population and still retains that sort of quiet town feel, whereas St. Catharines is busier, with lots of shopping etc..

And often Thorold is lumped in with info on St. Catharines.. so you can search St. Catharines, Ontario housing... and you will find things in Thorold too...
Welland is also cheaper for housing than St. Catharines.. and is fast to get too by highway..it may have more apartment opportunities as it is larger than Thorold.
Fonthill is all one word.. but pronounced font hill.. and I don't know who told you it is cheap! :-) It is VERY expensive with large new homes! Very nice area though!
